13 Steps for Successful Spell Casting

 by Andreika the Witch

1) Think clearly about what you need.If you need a car, perhaps it would be best to do a spell that will help you to bring a car into your life, rather than asking for a few thousand dollars to come your way so that you can buy a car. Magic can work in many ways and you might be limiting yourself if you donĂt stay open to all possibilities! But remember, magic works best if you really need something, rather than just desiring it.

2) Set a goal that is clear, concise and unambiguous.
Focus only upon one work of magic at a time. For best results, don't scatter your power, channel it in one direction.

3) Avoid distractions when performing your spell.
To be effective in your magic, you must be fully focussed upon your intentions. Put time and energy into preparing yourself and your spell. Find a location where you can work your spell in private, without any distractions.

4) Choose the right timing for your spell.
By choosing particular days, and by working in harmony with the phases of the moon, you can enhance the effectiveness of your spell. The days of the week and the phases of the moon all have specific energies associated with them, and by knowing the right time for your spell, you can give it greater power. Working magic is like swimming in the ocean, you are going to get to your destination quicker and easier if the currents and tides are moving in the direction you are wanting to go. You can still get there even if everything is going against you, but it will not be as easy to achieve your goal.

5) Use appropriate symbols for your spell.
When doing the spell, have appropriate music, incense, colours, objects and tools around you to reinforce the message of the spell to your subconscious.

6) Set a time for a result.
Include in your spell an indication of when you would like to see a result. If your spell is for greater prosperity, include a date for when you would like to see that extra cash in your wallet or purse.

7) Create a simple rhyme to use during the spell.
Chanting a few appropriate words that you have written yourself, will have a much better effect than reading text from an ancient spell book. Repeat your wording lots of times during your spell. Repetition is the key to sending a message to your subconscious.

8) Use the "For the good of all!" clause.
When creating the wording for your spell, remember to include the phrase, "For the good of all!" This phrase will help your spells to enhance your life, without having your good fortune being at the expense of another. Another useful phrase is, "This or something better now comes to me." Often that which you want at this point in your life may be different to what you really need, and it's only when you look with hindsight from a future point in time that you can realise this. So, by asking "for this or something better," you leave yourself open to greater possibilities becoming available to you. I have heard so many examples of spells going wrong when the "For the good of all!" wording is not taken into consideration. One friend did a spell to get $1,000 for a holiday, and two weeks later his house was burgled, and the insurance reimbursement cheque ended up being $1,000 exactly. Another person I know did a spell so that she could have some time off work, and she promptly broke her leg, requiring three months off work! I have also heard (many times) about people who do a spell to lose weight, and they get diarrhoea, or excessive vomiting, or both. They sure lost weight, but not in a healthy way. Be careful for what you wish for, because you may get it!

9) Realise the consequences of having what you asked for.
Apart from the examples just given, there are other consequences to be aware of. When something comes into your life, certain responsibilities come along with it. For example, when doing a spell to get a car, remember that along with the car comes registration costs, petrol and repair bills, perhaps monthly loan repayments, etc. Are you in a position to handle these? A Law of Exchange is always at work when magic is used. Sometimes what you have wished for seems to come out of thin air, with little effort on your part, but often it will arrive from more mundane sources. For example, it may be that after doing a spell for a car, you win $20,000 in the lottery and you can buy it...Or it may simply be that you are offered the chance to do extra hours at your work, or a second job turns up so that you are then in a financial position to afford a loan for the dream car. Are you prepared to give this extra energy to the universe/gods in exchange for the items you wished for? Another way in which money can become available to you after casting a prosperity spell, is through being asked if you want to sell something that is of value to you. Are you willing to part with that family heirloom if someone makes an offer out of the blue?

10) Avoid using words that you don't understand.
Spell books are great for getting ideas, but the spell will work better if you put it into words that are meaningful to you. In the book "The Key of Solomon the King" there is a spell for gaining inspiration, and at one point the spell-caster is supposed to say the Hebrew words, "Vegale hamicata umsa terata yeh dah ma baxasoxa un horah himesere..." But this sort of wording does nothing to focus awareness upon the aim of the spell. It is much better to make something up yourself. For example, for an "inspiration" spell, you could scry into a water-filled cauldron and say the words, "Beneath the stars and moon so bright, from cauldron deep and candlelight, the answer that I seek tonight is now revealed into my sight."

11) Use positives not negatives.
Make sure that the wording of your spell is phrased in a positive manner. For example, with a health spell don't use wording such as "I don't want to be sick anymore." Your subconscious doesn't recognise words like "don't want", it can only focus on words that it can put an image to, i.e. the word "sick". Spells are basically affirmations that include images or symbols, so while doing a healing spell, visualise yourself as healthy and turn this phrase around to something like, "I am healthy, I am strong - all the day and all night long!"

12) Be realistic.
Expect miracles, but don't go overboard! A love spell will help you to attract romance into your life, but a love spell to attract a Hollywood movie star as your lover is unrealistic. Even Merlin would have trouble with that one!

13) Raise power for the spell (if appropriate).

You can raise power to help send your wishes off into the universe by drumming, chanting, dancing, or even by running around your magical circle. Power raising is like pumping up an air rifle before aiming and releasing the energy, so after raising energy, drop to the ground and visualise your spell as fully manifest. See it in your mind clearly, and send this image into the universe knowing that it has already come true.

Please remember: A magic spell will not work by simply repeating some words that you find in a spell book. The magic of a spell is contained within you - your needs, your desires, and the energy you are prepared to put into the working of the spell. If there is no personal power in your spell, it is only words.

Timing your Magic with the Moon

Timing your magic with the phases of the Moon is essential for success. A rule of thumb is to remember for white magic, this is best done while the moon is waxing (increasing in light; new to full). The best time is as close to the full moon as possible. Love spells, acquiring a new job, wealth success and so forth.

When the moon is waning (decreasing in light; full to new), this is the best time for success in black magic and works of destruction, the best time being as close to the new moon as possible. The waning moon is also a good time for ending things, banishing spells and ending personal bad habits, losing weight.

Moon in Aries
Projects begun when the moon is in Aries often begin with much enthusiasm, but tend not to last. This is a good time for inciting conflicts, high energy, me, mine, war, knives, weapons, guns, quick but not lasting results, fire, sharp things, metals, daring, sticking up for yourself, risk taking, independence. Inciting accidents. Magic ruled by Mars. Do NOT have surgical procedures performed on the head or face at this time.

Moon in Taurus
Projects begun when the moon is in Taurus are usually permanent or long lasting, especially when performed in when the moon is in the first ten degrees of the sign. Money, finances, possessions, material things, sensualism, Earth, greed, permanence, wealth, things that increase in value, loans, bankers, slow but lasting results, time delays. Magic ruled by the Earth and Venus. Do NOT have surgical procedures performed on the neck or throat at this time.

Moon in Gemini
Communications, short distance travel, duality in nature. Thievery, trickery, pulling a fast one, relatives, siblings and neighbors, computers. This sign lacks staying power and projects begun when moon is in Gemini tend to change. Not a good sign for black magickal workings. More neutral in nature. Magic ruled by Mercury has the best outcome. Do NOT have surgical procedures performed on the shoulders, arms, hands, or nerves at this time.

Moon in Cancer
Anything to do with the home, family, food, nurturing, the mother, women in general. Things tend to last as Cancer is a clingy sign. Good for love spells, weather spells, altar consecration, blessing the home, mediumship, psychic endeavors, inciting over-emotionalism. Spells for the success in buying land, purchasing real estate, a decent place to live, reconciling family members. Do NOT have surgical procedures performed on the stomach at this time. Magic corresponding to the moon. With love relationships or marriages begun when the moon is in Cancer, if the parties break up, they often tend to reunite.

Moon in Leo
Good for anything having to do with children, creativity, good for casting love spells; romance, success in gambling, winning, attracting center stage, personal charisma, men in general, the father, hobbies, speculation, risk taking, investments, stocks and bonds, authority. Spells for gaining positions of power and authority over others. Do NOT have surgical procedures performed on the heart, spine or back at this time. Leo is a fixed sign and projects begun when the moon is in this sign tend to last. Magical workings ruled by the Sun.

Moon in Virgo
Health, sickness, wellness, things that require precision and perfection, hygiene, nutrition, herbs, vitamins, the armed forces, clothing, the work place, co-workers, workings of white magick and healing for others, service to others. Things that involve details. Hospitals, healing, the medical profession, institutions, bureaucracy, red tape, attention to detail. Virgo tends towards change. Do NOT have surgical procedures performed on the intestines, anus or digestive system at this time. Magical workings ruled by Mercury.

Moon in Libra
Good time to form love relationships, marriages, partnerships of all kinds or cast spells to ensure the success of or to incite these. Peace, diplomacy, negotiation, legal matters, workings with two people, contracts, getting people to do what you want them to do easily and peacefully. Do NOT have surgical procedures performed on the kidneys or lower back at this time. Best for love spells.

Moon in Scorpio
This is one of the best signs for black magical workings. Revenge, hatred, venting, exposing secrets, death spells, surgery, transformation, obsession, pure sex, the occult, the darker side of things, extremes, research, banishing spells, ending things permanently, death and dying. This is the most powerful and intense of all the moon signs. Secret, underhanded and covert operations, willpower, drastic destruction. Magical workings ruled by Pluto. Like its opposite sign Taurus, Scorpio is usually permanent. Do NOT have surgical procedures performed on the pelvis, reproductive or sex organs at this time.

Moon in Sagittarius

Religion, Universities, travel, higher education, gambling, good luck, good for ceremonial magick, best for white magick, publishing, sports, the outdoors, the law. Pulling off something big. Do NOT have surgical procedures performed on the hips or thighs at this time. Magical workings ruled by Jupiter are successful at this time.

Moon in Capricorn
When the moon is in Capricorn, this is another excellent time for black magickal workings. Depression, ruthlessness, using people viciously, long term results. Honors, social standing, responsibility, authority, structure, setting long term goals and plans for the future. NOT a good time to seek favors from those in authority. Magickal workings and spells that feature a time delay or are lasting, wasting, manipulating people, business, banishing. Do NOT have surgical procedures performed on the bones/skeletal system, teeth, or knees at this time. This is a “ruthless” moon sign. Workings ruled by the malefic Saturn are favored at this time.

Moon in Aquarius
Friends, groups, platonic relationships, society, electricity, workings within a coven, computers, technology, individuality, originality, freedom, independence, humanity, anarchy, the unexpected, bolt out of the blue, genius, revelation, goals and ideals, shocking people. This is the best moon sign for spells of independence and breaking away from restrictive situations. Freedom and coming into your own. Do NOT have surgical procedures performed on the calves or ankles at this time. Workings ruled by Uranus are favored.

Moon in Pisces
Poison, drugs, self undoing, deception, sorrow, depression, isolation, insanity, very deep psychic stuff. Good for success in meditation and all psychic pursuits. Spells to deceive people, secrets, swindles, vulnerability. Secret enemies, altered states. This is the one of best times for endings, especially when the moon is in 20-30 degrees of the sign (make sure it is not void). Psychic healing can be done. Masochism. Do NOT have surgical procedures performed on the feet at this time.

The Arte of Spell Crafting

The Arte of Spell Crafting

Spell Crafting is Magic – or a least one form of Magic. It is an ancient practice, practised by many cultures all over the world since time began. People have always sought to change their lives or environments, casting spells is one of the ways that people have brought about that which they most desire. There have always been those that have an aptitude for Magic and have been willing to use it to help others – religious priests/priestesses, mages, sorcerers, witches, wise women etc. These people had the knowledge of Magic and how to use it to tap into the Magical Realms to bring about change. This is the knowledge of Spell Crafting.

Spell Crafting is the Arte of creating a desired outcome through the use of Magic by blending ingredients together that vibrate on the same or similar magical level as the intended result. Witches, as do many other magical peoples, believe that everything vibrates at its own particular magical level, whether it’s animal, vegetable or mineral. Spell Crafting is the arte of bringing together the right vibrations to manifest a particular outcome. For instance, if the desired affect of a spell is prosperity, then items – crystals, herbs, oils for example, that vibrate at a prosperity level are brought together in a predetermined way using the energy of the moon, words or incantations, the raising of energy in an informed way, all with the intent of releasing a surge of energy into the Universe in order to bring about change in ones financial situation. The Spell Crafter uses their own energy, focus and intent to fuel and enhance the spell, but above all else integrity should be uppermost in the mind of the practitioner. At its most basic, Spell Crafting is a prayer, or a petitioning to the Gods/Universe to help us with what we require. Spell Crafting helps us to be more proactive and physical in our approach and gives a sense of ritual and of taking action.

The moment we form the idea of a spell in our minds the magic begins to take effect, as thought forms and imagery are powerful magic in themselves. We allow the thoughts to take form in our minds, thinking the ideas through, planning the Moon Phase, day of the week etc. All the time the energy is building and gaining momentum. We choose and gather the items we will need to help our focus and raise the magical vibrations surrounding the soon to be cast spell. If we are going to use invocations or rhymes we plan them and write them down. When the hour draws near we cast our circle, making our space sacred and safe, we set out our magical ingredients, keeping our intent uppermost in our minds, and we begin to raise the energy. This can be done in many ways – chanting, clapping, singing, rocking back and forth. When we judge the time ready we assemble our spell as we have seen it in our minds eye, adding the incantations or rhymes we have prepared.

We keep our intent firmly at the fore of our minds, concentrating as deeply as we can. We further raise the energy and when the time is right we release the energy with a shout, or by stamping our feet or whatever seems appropriate at the time. Once the spell has been cast and released the trick is to simply let it go! Don’t worry away at it like a dog with a bone! If you do, your Spell is less likely to work. You have petitioned the Universe/Gods for your desire and you must trust that they will act accordingly. If you trust the outcome, your spell will work.
Ethics of Spell Crafting
As with all magical work, the ethics behind the magic is of paramount importance, Spell Crafting is no different. These ethics must NEVER be overlooked as the dangers of playing with any kind of magic are very real and it’s not worth the risk. Spell Crafting therefore should not be entered into lightly or exercised without the right intent.
The basic rules of spell casting are thus:
  • Another person’s free will cannot be interfered with or taken away.
  • The effect on all others needs to be taken into consideration.
  • If you wish to work for another, or someone asks you to work for someone else, permission of the person must always be sought.
  • Cursing, bidding or binding should not be undertaken.
Before any magical work is ever attempted the practitioner should always ask themselves if the work is absolutely necessary—spell craft is no different. Many people who have no idea of magic will often approach a practitioner and ask for magical advice or spell work. Often a spell is not the answer, but people want a quick fix for all their problems and think that magic will do the trick. Often they don’t want to take responsibility for themselves or their problems, and turn to magic to solve all their ills. Any magical work taken on for these people will rarely succeed and you will have expended a lot of your energy for nothing. It is up to the spell crafter to judge the situation and act accordingly. More often than not you will decide against the work. Convincing the other person that the spell is unnecessary is the hard part! Witches spend a lot of time counselling others rather than performing magic.

With spell crafting comes many a sad story—people turn to magic when all else has failed and they are often desperate. It’s important that the witch, whilst showing compassion and empathy, is able to keep a little distance. This is both necessary for the spell crafter and the “client”; it keeps the relationship professional and enables the witch to keep herself protected and her energy guarded. As with healing, it is not good to take any of the other person’s negativity/emotions on as this will hinder your work.
A consultation is necessary before any spell work commences so that the practitioner has a good idea of what is needed. Surrounding circumstances need to be taken into consideration: Who else is involved? Who may this spell affect? Should the work even be attempted? What state of mind is the person in? What do they expect from the work? Is it practical or are they asking the impossible? All these and many other questions should be considered. Notes should be taken so that the practitioner has an all round view of the situation and can make a valid judgement as to whether the work is appropriate.

When working for others or yourself you must always ask if what is asked for is truly what is wanted. The universe often gives a person what they need rather than what they want—these can often be very different things! People need to know this and be prepared for whatever the outcome. The old saying “Be careful what you wish for—you just may get it”, is very true indeed!

Love spells

These types of spells are perhaps the most commonly requested, and the ones that require the most integrity and an ethical approach. The rules of any love spell are deceptively simple but often the hardest to make a non-practitioner understand.

You cannot take away another’s will, so you cannot make someone fall in love! Many people experience unrequited love—they think they love someone but the object of their desire does not feel the same way—so they turn to Spell Crafters to make the person love them in return. To do this you have to psychically interfere with the will of the person for whom the spell is intended and the spell therefore becomes a spell of binding or bidding (bringing someone to a place or person against their will and keeping them there). Whilst there are spells that will do this, this is tantamount to taking away the will of the person for whom the spell is intended and this is ethically and morally wrong. If the desired person cannot be attracted to you in the usual way then magic is not the answer. To use spell crafting will result in an unhappy relationship with nothing but doubt and heartache. Surely it is better to have a person love you because they have come to the relationship through their own free will and not because magic has bound them. If they are there against their will then only sadness can be guaranteed.

The best type of love spell, and therefore the most ethical, is the love spell that opens a person’s heart to the idea of love and the possibility of a new love entering their life—a non-specific person, but the person that is meant to be never-the-less. It is important that the person who requires this type of spell feels love for him, or herself, first, and can then open his or her heart to others—the love of another will often follow. Only work love spells of this nature.

The Power of Words and Rhymes

Everything has its own beat and rhythm, from the Universe pulsing and growing to the molecules within our own bodies. The Earth pulses to the ebb and flow of life, the tides, seasons, moon phases, sun phases, weather, temperatures to name but a few. Everything beats to its own rhythm of life, and we are no different.

As Magical Folk we are aware of this even if it is only subconsciously. However we work with the tides and ebb and flow of the seasons, moon and sun very closely when working our magic or when in worship and after a time we begin to notice the rhythms more consciously and tap into them on many other levels. These natural rhythms join us to everything on the Magical Web that gently pulsates with its own ancient heartbeat.
Spell casting is no different and with the use of chants and rhymes we can further raise the power of a Spell by finding a rhythm within the Spell itself. It is ok to simply write your spell without a rhyme or chant but once you have tapped into the rhythm of your spell you can access a deeper magical consciousness through the use of rhymes. The heart of the spell becomes the chant itself. By chanting or speaking your spell in rhyme you are tapping into the beat of nature, and by repeating the chant or rhyme over and over again you are entering into a mild hypnotic state that allows your unconsciousness to tap into your own ancient powers deep rooted in nature itself and to release it into the Universe to drive your desire and help make it manifest on the mundane planes. By using rhyme and chants you are helping to power your spell and send it forth. The words in a rhyme or chant forms a pattern within the beat of the piece which alters your state of mind and consciousness, by its hypnotic effect. This pattern, because it is regular, suggests order and harmony as opposed to chaos, helping you to access a positive force within yourself. Once you have reached that state of higher consciousness through your incantation, you are more easily able to access the higher realms and change events or call on spirits to help you, by psychic means.

As already stated, you do not have to use this technique in all your spells, but the simple act of creating a rhyming spell helps you to focus more intently on your needs and helps to build the energy right from the beginning. Remember, the energy begins to build the moment you have decided to work a spell, and the imagination is heightened when composing the chant or rhyme.

These rhymes can be a simple as you like. You don’t have to be a poet to compose them! You need simple words that will create a basic rhythm and beat when you recite them. State what it is you require in the form of simple poetry and set it in simple words. As you feel more confident with this type of work you can make the rhymes more complicated if you wish – but I always think that to keep it simple is best and can be more effective. Here is an example of a short spell written by a friend and used in a Poppet healing ritual:

With these threads we gently gather
A healing spell around thee hither
Health of body, heart and mind
Clear sight and vision in thee find
Drawn gently back to Earth you be
By the power of 3 x 3
Chanted spell so be it done
Strengthened by the power of One

The spell is very simple, stating what it is we wanted to achieve and what we were concentrating on, what we wanted to bring in – the healing and well being of the person for whom the Poppet was intended. It has a simple beat and is easy to memorise so that it can be chanted over and over again. It is traditional to chant these rhyming spells at least 3 times or in multiples of 3. This is because the number 3 is sacred. It is the number that describes that which was, is and will be and of course it has many representations. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have the perfect speaking voice or singing voice, you just need to have a tone that is comfortable for you and expresses your own magical style. The important thing is that you understand that this type of magic takes you into a light hypnotic state so you should be aware of this and use your voice accordingly, whether you whisper the incantation, intone it or sing. Saying them silently is acceptable but I feel that the power is built with your voice more easily and you are less distracted. You don’t need to memorise it if you feel you can’t but simply have it written in front of you. However you decide to proceed imagine the words reverberating within the psychic and hidden realms helping you access that which you want.

This form of Spell Crafting is very effective and I personally include a rhyme or chant in most of my spells as it helps me focus very strongly. The beauty of this form of Spell Crafting is that is can be used alone with nothing more than a candle to help focus. All you have to do is prepare your space and yourself in the usual way, relax with a little meditation, light your candle and begin your incantation. It can be as easy as that! Obviously with time and practice you will find this method easier and become more proficient. The beauty of it is that this is a very safe way to work and one that is enjoyable. It opens your imagination and your creativity can flow more easily. You only need to make sure that the work is rhythmic and has one or two rhymes. And that, above all, the meaning is clear and good, with real intention.

Building Energy

The building of energy around your spell work is of vital importance. This process begins as soon as you decide to take any magical action when solving a problem for yourself or others through the medium of spell work. The end result of building the correct energy around your spell is to charge your spell, like a battery, and cast its energy out to the Universe.

When you have examined all the pros and cons of your intended spell and have decided that you will go ahead with it, the intent or you working has already been released into the Universe and will slowly gather momentum as you fuse your magical ideas together and start to plan the body of your spell – materials, ritual, desire, intent etc.

With each chosen ingredient the magical energy will steadily build. You will chooses herbs, crystals, candles, colours, day, moon phase etc. These will correspond with each other and the intent for your working. All these choices are built around raising the vibrational energy of you Spell Crafting, helping to strengthen it and your focus and intent, raising it above the normal frequencies so that it is powerful enough to carry your desire to the Universe/Gods.

As you prepare for the ritual itself in whatever way is usual for you, your mind will start to relax and prepare itself for the work ahead and you will begin to take on your magical persona This is the idea behind ritual and carrying out a set pattern of behaviour beforehand – ritual bath, setting out your sacred space, casting circle etc and working with familiar ritual tools and symbols these all create a state of almost self hypnoses designed to help clear your mind, raise you psychic awareness and focus your intent.

Before you start your ritual you will make sure you are relaxed and grounded and aware of your own energy – maybe your heart beat is a little faster, perhaps you are aware of you solar plexus pulsing, your palms feeling warm and tingly. All this is your own energy being raised subconsciously, ready for the Spell Crafting to begin. Start with a little meditation – thinking about your desire and intent. Put down “roots” from you base chakra into the earth and pull up the earth energy – feel it come up into your body in time with your heart beat. Breathe deeply and also rhythmically noting your body’s natural rhythm.

Whilst building energy around a spell some people find it helps to rock two and fro, helping the energy further, finding a rhythm within the body that carries beyond to the spell crafting itself. Rhyming spells help with this by finding a rhythm and a meter by which to work. When the spell is put together to your satisfaction then the energy must be raised as high as you can. This can be done in a number of ways:

Clapping – start slowly and softly, rocking to and fro, concentrating on your desire and intent, slowly build the clapping up faster and louder, raising your hand slowly upwards over the spell until the momentum takes you as fast and as loud as you can go. When ready send the energy up and out with a loud single clap and a shout, throwing your hand out and up – effectively releasing the spell

Chanting can also help – it takes the mind off the mundane and helps you focus on your work. Chanting the rhyme of the spell if you have written one is excellent, or any of the usual Witchcraft chants. Use your voice, rocking to and fro once more, and keep it up foe as long as you need to focus your energy and charge your spell.

Clapping and chanting together – this is VERY effective and a method I use myself. It really focuses the mind and helps to tap into your subconscious raising your psychic energy and therefore enabling you to really strengthen your desire and intent.

Dance – a wonderful way to build energy.

Always remember to ground yourself afterwards! This is important as you need to pull yourself back from the Magical Realms into the mundane world. You can do this simply by eating and drinking something, this will help to ground you and will give you back some of the strength you have used within your magical work.

Spell Crafting as a traditional form of magic still has its place to play within contemporary Witchcraft. Once all the ethics have been taken into account it is important to remember to enjoy your Spell Crafting to really get the most out of it. It must be approached with respect and caution, but it should always be something one enjoys and loves. As your Spell Crafting develops and grows so also will you grow within your Craft.

Through this ancient Arte you come to a magical understanding of how the Universe/Gods can be petitioned to help achieve the things we want or need in life and how the power of the seemingly most simple things around us can help us tune into our natural magical abilities.

Basic Spell Construction

Basic Spell Construction
www.sacred-magick.com
by Anon

Because of the very nature of Magick, each working should be highly individualized and personal. Even if following a traditional spell, it should be tailored to your specific needs to be most effective for you. Understanding the basics of Spell Construction will enable you to formulate your own specific, effective spells for any purpose you desire.

Preliminary planning is necessary. The very first step is to decide precisely what your desired end result is to be. Before you can start, you must decide where you are going. You must be very explicit.

It is important, also, that you choose your time carefully. You should take into consideration all Astrological implications, energy currents and Moon phases.

The Moon is the astronomical body closest to us and, therefore, has a profound influence upon us, it is very important to choose a time when the Moon is in an astrological sign which is appropriate for your working. For example: Aries/Action - Enthusiasm, Taurus/ Renewal - Sensuality, Gemini/Communication - Curiosity, Cancer/ Emotion - Nurturing, Leo/Vitality - Determined, Virgo/Organizing - Studious, Libra/Balance - Cooperation, Scorpio/Sexual - Philosophical, Capricorn/Authority - Ambitious, Aquarius/Innovation - Social, Pisces/Sensitivity - Idealistic.

Bear in mind that magickal workings for gain, increase or bringing things to you, should be initiated when the Moon is Waxing (from Dark to Full); when the Moon is Waning (from Full to Dark), it is time for magickal workings of decrease or sending away.

The highest energy occurs at the Full Moon and, therefore, this is the most powerful time for magickal workings. The New Moon is the next most powerful time for Magick.

Whenever possible, follow Nature's natural Energy Currents. There is a natural time for starting things (a planting time), for maturing things (a growing time), for reaping things ( a harvest time) and, of course, a time for rest and planning.

Flowing with these currents will make your magickal work much easier.

Remember to plan your project for a time of uninterrupted privacy. It is important that you have no distractions. Generally speaking, it is best to work as late at night as possible. A time when there is less frantic energy is most appropriate. You might consider Midnight or later.

In choosing a place to do your magickal working pay particular attention to your needs, for you must be comfortable. Your place should be private, quiet and secure. If at all possible, set aside a special place for this purpose only. An unused room, a special corner of your bedroom, a quiet, secluded spot in your garden. A place that is yours. A place that you can come to whenever need arises and that is as free from intrusion of others as possible.

Prior to the night of your magickal working, gather together the things that you will need. All of the things used are tools. They have no inherent magick. They are to help you create a mood. If correctly made and used, they will trigger primitive responses from deep within you. They should be chosen with care. Consider the purpose of your ritual and choose your tools accordingly. If your magick is to be sexual, your candles, oils, incenses and so forth, should bring forth a sexual response. If the desired result of your Magick is Tranquillity, then the tools should make you feel calm, peaceful and serene. Any candles you might use should not have commercially added fragrances as these may not be appropriate for your working.

Prior to your ritual, prepare yourself and your equipment by any means necessary to clean and purify. Historically, people have fasted, followed meticulous and detailed bathing practices, practiced chastity and used many other methods.

Most often a Ritual Bath is the preferred method. A bath frequently utilizing candlelight, fragrant herbs, bath salts or sensuous oils. A sumptuous hot bath, special bathing preparations and appropriate lighting, combined, can create the soothing effect which will help in the very important step of relaxing and clearing the mind completely of all mundane thoughts and experiences of the day. Your ritual Bath should, also, begin to set the specific vibrations conducive to your purpose into motion. You must not only cleanse and purify but must, also, begin to create the type of energy necessary. Once your purification process has been accomplished, you are now ready to begin. Proceed to the special place you have previously chosen in which to perform your magick. If at all possible, you should make use of the primitive responses set into motion by a well chosen piece of music. Your music should start slowly and build to a rousing climax.

As you use your oils, light your candle or incense (or utilize any other tool you have chosen), you should begin to further intensify the energy that you have set into motion around you. A high degree of intensity is vitally important.

The Altered State of Consciousness that you must reach is not a meditative state. Anything that interferes with your ability to concentrate upon, reach and control the high energy state necessary to perform magick should be avoided. Such as, screaming children, a sink full of dirty dishes, use of alcohol or drugs, etc.

Do not scatter your energy by attempting to do more than one magickal working at a time.

Remember that Magick is the manipulation of energy, a thought is a form of energy and a visualization is an even stronger form of energy. Your visualization can be a method used to intensify further and direct your will. Your visualization can be the method by which you control the magickal energy you have produced. You must know what you want. You must see it. You must feel the high energy flow. You must direct it.

One of the most important elements in the practice of any form of Magick is the Universal Law of Cause and Effect. This means that whatever you do (or don't do) you cause something to happen.

The most important consideration is the Universal Law of Retribution. This means that no matter what you do, it comes back to you in like kind.

It is the nature of things that as you send something out it gains momentum, so that, by the time it comes back to you, it is three times stronger. If you do something nice for someone, someone will do something nicer for you.

"As you weave and
spin your spell,
Three fold return
the tale will tell."

The Art of Spell Casting

The Art of Spell Casting
by Moon

Spells project your will and intention into the universe to create change you desire. Some spells involve the use of natural ingredients such as crystals, herbs and incense as well as objects such as photographs, signitures or anything that has been in contact with the person you wish to influence or the changes you wish to happen( ex, you go for job interview and get hold of an object of the interviewer and then do a spell to secure the job with the object). These items for some are an intergral part of spell casting, as they serve to connect the willpower of the magickian with the energy of the Universe. However the most fundemental catalyst for a successful spell is thought, just pure thought and projecting that thought into energy.

Magick is based on the idea that the events that take place in the physical( mundane world) are just one aspect of reality, that is what we perceive with our five senses are simpley the external manifestations of deeper processes at work.

The human mind has many levels of awareness: On a conscious level it takes things at face value and discerns meaning and on an unconscious level it is capablof of picking up on people's thought and transmitting them to others.

Recent advances in quantum physics have shown that thoughts are energy and like electrical impulses they jump. Your thoughts are affecting the people around you as well as shaping your life( the power belongs to you). Most of the time people don't attempt to control their thoughts, they jump from issue to issue , subject to subject in a rapid way which makes most people's lives seem chaotic.

Spells allow you to concentrate, and direct your thought energy toward a specific goal and purpose. When your intention is clear and your thoughts are charged with passion and determination you instantly ascend to a level of awareness where you can create for yourself whatever it is you desire. This level of awareness is known as the universal energy field a domain where the unconcsious minds and mental processess of all human beings are linked. By tapping in the universal energy field when you cast a spell, it influences a person's thought process on an unconscious level and affects their behaviour accordingly. We only use a dime's worth of our brain, we naturally can project thought without candles, incense ect.... However it is harder done then said. Our brain is capable of transmitting our thoughts and feelings therefore influencing our desire and will.

The Art Of Casting

“A spell is a symbolic act done in an altered state of consciousness in order to cause a desired change."
To cast a spell is to project energy through a symbol. It is important to note that the energy is what is key, not the symbol; too often, the symbols are mistaken for the agent that casts the spell. While props are useful at times, it is the mind that works the magic.

Correspondences between colors, planets, metals, numbers, plants and minerals, and musical notes make up a great deal of magical lore, and particular objects, shapes, colors, scents, and images do work better than others to embody certain ideas. The most powerful spells are often improvised from materials that feel right or that simply happen to come to hand, however.

Theory of Spellcasting

Spells are an important aspect of magical training. They require the use of the combined faculties of relaxation, visualization, concentration and projection. The casting of spells provides practice in coordinating these skills and developing them further. Spells are extremely sophisticated psychological tools that have subtle, but important, effects on a person's inner growth.

Spells may highlight otherwise hidden complexes of the person casting the spell. A person who has conflicts about success will find great difficulty in concentrating on a money spell, for example. Many times the practical results of a spell are far less important than the psychological insights that arise during the magical work, for discovering our inner blocks and fears is the first step in overcoming them. Spells also go one step further than most forms of psychotherapy, in that they allow us not only to listen to and interpret the unconscious, but also to speak to it in the language it understands.

Symbols, images, and objects used in spells communicate directly with Younger Self, who is the guardian of our emotions and who is barely affected by the intellect. We often understand our feelings and behavior but find ourselves unable to change them, but through spells, we can attain the most important power - the power to change our lives as we wish them to be.

Spellcasting also forces us to come to terms with the material world. Many people attracted to the spiritual path of the Craft find themselves uneasy with using magic for practical or material goals. Somehow it seems wrong to work magic for oneself, to want things and to get things. This is an attitude which is a holdover of the Judeo-Christian world view that sees spirit and matter as separate and that identifies matter with evil and corruption.

In the Craft, flesh, the material world, none of what is commonly thought of as matter is separate from spirit. The universe is made up of the Goddess- God or deity of one's choise who is manifest in all things. Union with your deity comes through embracing the material world and all the gifts that it has placed in it for us. Our major task on this plane of existence is to become masters of this realm of manifestation. We do not fight self-interest; we follow it, but with an awareness that transmutes it into something sacred.

Mechanics of Spellcasting

Spellcasting is the lesser, not the greater magic; but the greater magic builds on the lesser. The paradox is that in spellcasting we may start out working with the personal self, but in order to work the magic we are forced to expand and recognize the Self that moves through all beings.

Magic involves the deliberate self-identification with other objects and people. For example, to do a healing, we must become the healer, the one who is healed, and the energy that is to do the healing. To attract love, we must be able to love ourselves and to become love its self.

Spells work in two basic ways. The first is through suggestion; symbols and images implant certain ideas in Younger Self, or the subconscious mind, and we are then influenced to actualize those ideas. Spells can also influence the external world.

The theoretical model that witches use to explain the workings of magic is a clear one and coincides in many ways with the "new" physics. It is simply an elaborate but extremely useful metaphor. The metaphor is based on a world view that sees things not as fixed objects, but as vortexes of energy.

The physical world is formed by the vortexes of energy, and if we cause a change in the energy patterns they, in turn, cause a change in the physical world. When our own energy is concentrated and channeled, it can move the broader energy currents. The images and objects used in spells are the channels. They are the vessels through which our power is poured, and by which it is shaped.

As energy is directed into the images we visualize, it gradually manifests physical form and takes shape in the material world.

Directing energy is not a matter of simply emoting. Emotion can be likened to a strobe light which provides a very inconstant light, while directed energy is more like a laser beam. Even concentrated power is a small stream compared with the vast surges of energy that surround us. The most adept witch cannot be successful in all her spells, for the opposing currents are often too strong.

The craft teaches to first identify the flow of energy and then to decide whether or not it is going where we want it to go. If it is not, then we can try to deflect it, or we may have to change our own course. Sensing the energy climate is a matter of intuition and experience. Some witches make a study of Astrology in an effort to plan their magical workings at the optimal times, while others prefer to work when they feel the time is right.

Of all the planets, the Moon's influence on subtle energies is the strongest. Subtle power increases as the Moon waxes, so the time of the waxing Moon is best for spells involving growth or increase, such as money spells. The power peaks when the Moon is full and that is the best time for workings of culmination and love. During the waning Moon, power subsides and turns inward. The waning Moon's period is used for banishings, bindings, and discovering hidden secrets.

The practical witch soon learns to adjust her spells to fit the time of the Moon. If, for example, she needs to do a money spell during the waning Moon, she would put a little 'English' on it and make it a poverty banishing spell.

Energy pursues the path of least resistance. Material results are more easily achieved on this plane of existence through physical actions than through magical workings. For example, it is simpler to lock your door than suffer the constant drain from maintaining psychic seals on your doors and windows while you are away from home.

Of course, once you have locked your door, you might feel more reassured by placing seals on it.

No magic spell is going to bring results unless channels are opened into the material world. For example, a job spell is useless if you are not willing to go out and interview for jobs or at least let potential employers know that you are in the market for one. In the same vein, a healing spell is no substitute for medical care, but certainley aids in recovery, sometimes a spell using chakras will open up the bodies natural will to heal itself. Mages have been known to perform healing on relatives that were in accidents and slated to pass on, in which the spells brought the reletive out of comma's and helped the bodies natural agents heal, and at times the healing was quickley, again it was the psychological energy involved.

Visualization used in creating a spell should focus on the desired result, not the individual steps leading up to the result.

We give the spell free rein in how it goes about achieving the results, spells have a habit of working in very unexpected ways. If you don't wish to harm another to assure that the power you have unleashed does not inadvertently cause harm, bind the spell. This serves to 'set' the form we have created so that the energy becomes fixed in the pattern we desire.

The energy we project to others affects us even more strongly than the other person. This is because we have generated the energy, and thus we have become the object at which the energy is directed.

If healing energy is sent out, then the health of the person casting the spell is enhanced. By the same token, any hex or curse that is sent out may affect the person who sends it, if percautions are not taken such as sheilds, also the words of the curse and hex may be thought out, at the end of a curse one may bind the curse to ensure it doesn't reverse on them.

MAGIC IS NOT TO BE USED TO GAIN POWER OVER OTHERS. Magic is a technique used in developing your own 'power from within.' Spells that are directed at gaining power over others weaken the 'power from within.' Aside from the damage done to oneself, it is important for another reason. Many people who do not understand the laws of magic are afraid of being attacked magically and are given to paranoia.

The witch's main stock-in-trade used to be removing a competitor's hexes and preparing charms to protect their clients. Do yourself a favor, and resist the temptation to 'help' these types that are prone to paranoia. They will never let you rest or give you peace there will be always something more they need your energies for. If you must help set a guideline for yourselves on how much and how far your willing to help each individuel person depending on their request.

Most magical formularies consist of formulae gathered and tested by witches as well as many charms to protect the common man from those same witches who sold them their charms.

Times and Correspondences

Over the years, systems of Correspondences were developed which assigned certain attributes and aspects to the seven ancient planets of Astrology. Each planet was assigned a God or Goddess, who embodies the attributes the ancients wished to invoke. Each of the Gods and Goddesses were assigned an hour of the day, color, incense, metal, number, signature, plant, mineral, musical note, and animal or bird.

General Guidelines for Casting Spells

( Note this is a general guideline and does not have to be followed to a tee... there are some that don't have an extra room, make the provisons and substitutions that you feel is best for you when you try to create your altar or space.)

Set aside a room for your magical work. Decorate it with things that put you in a magical mood. Remember to use things that stimulate all five of your physical senses. Some obvious things would be the use of appropriate colors for sight, incense for scent, music for hearing, wines for taste, and textures for feel.
If you do not have a room you can set aside exclusively for your magical work, then choose a room that can be locked while you do your work. This will allow you to work undisturbed. In any case, you should clean your work area periodically with a purifying agent, it can be a poweder, floorwash, sage,ect... whatever you feel will keep away negative vibrations.

Set up an altar to be used as your worktable. It's size and shape should be those that appeal to you. Placing candles and other items that assist you to concentrate on the work at hand is a good practice. Some people like to cover their altar with a white cloth and place fresh cut flowers on it every day.

The subconscious is very good at making do with raw materials that one has and it can shape to its own use. ( the most expensive materials doesn't mean you will get the best results) Any materials that you feel comfortable with and you can afford is suitable.... for example how good of a result will one get if they have spent to much money on items... that one couldn't afford... it would more likely take away from what you are trying to accomplish because your subconscious would be harbouring on the cost of the materials.

Never cast a spell until you have a clear and concise picture of what it is you wish to accomplish. This ties in with the saying "Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it."

Always ground out any extra energy you raise for the spell, and release it back into the universe to go back with love whereever it is needed.Once you have cast the spell, do not discuss it with any one until after it has worked. Most spells peter out because the person who cast it speaks about it to so many people, or they have doubt and want reassurance, that the spell is robbed of power before it has a chance to work. The ancient bond placed on the magician was to dare, to know and to keep silent.

Poppet Construction

On Basic Poppet Construction - Building the Magick
Source

Ok, so now you’ve decided to make a poppet. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be. It can be made of any material you like – and not just cloth, either. A poppet can be made from clay, wax, wood – let your imagination run wild. Try to remember that the more work you put into it, and the more complex it is, the stronger your link will be to your goal. A poppet is a device for sympathetic magick. In other words, all of its components will be symbols of what it is you hope to achieve.

Poppet construction can either be done as part of the spellwork itself, or it can be done ahead of time, leaving the poppet to be used later on. The choice is yours.
Remember, the poppet is representing a person. Accordingly, before you begin construction, you need to determine what sort of spell you are doing. Do you have someone you want to keep out of your life? Want to stop someone who spreads gossip? Or is there a friend who wants to get a job and needs some magickal assistance? Do you just want a protection poppet to keep around your house or in your car? The possibilities are endless, but it’s a good idea to determine your goal before you get started. It will save you from countless “do-overs” later on.

The directions here are for a simple poppet construction using fabric. We’ll go through it step by step, but feel free to modify or “tweak” anything you need.

Selecting Your Fabric

Obviously, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to material. However, you can choose your fabric based on your purpose. For example, someone doing a money poppet might select a piece of green or gold cloth, or a festive cotton print covered in dollar signs. If you’re looking for love, try something in pink, or perhaps in a heart design.
Fabric is inexpensive – most craft shops such as Joann or Michael’s – even Walmart has a craft section -- sell cotton prints at less than $3 a yard. You can make a LOT of poppets with a yard of fabric. Be sure to check for the post-holiday sales, and you can get a ton of great fabric to save for later.

Another alternative to purchasing fabric is to use something that links the poppet to your target. Ask your friend who is job-searching to give you an old t-shirt, or when you’re trying to draw love into your life, cut up that pair of silky pajamas that you slept in last night. Poppets don’t care what you make them out of, and they won’t be insulted if you use previously worn material.

When all else fails, and you just can’t seem to find the right fabric, a plain piece of muslin or felt is perfect for the job.

Here are a few additional suggestions for poppet fabric, based on their purposes.
Spell Goal:Fabric Color:Patterns to try:
Prosperity Green, gold, silver Dollar signs, dollar bills, earth symbols
Love Pink, red Hearts, Cupids, roses or other flowers
Banishing Black Swords, wands, dragons
Creativity Orange, Yellow Suns, fire symbols
Protection Red, white Keys or locks, fences, mistletoe
Spirituality White, blue, silver Moons, clouds, air or water symbols
Animals Brown Cats, dogs, anything pet-related

When it comes to texture of the fabric, anything goes. Cotton is easy enough to work with, but if you’re an inexperienced sewer, you may want to stick with something stiffer at first, such as felt, which is available in darn near every color imaginable. Felt will hold its shape nicely as you sew, and its natural properties help keep the fabric from slipping during assembly.

Now that you’ve figured out what fabric to use, let’s move on!

Poppet Shape

Because the poppet is representing a person, we want it to look like -- you guessed it -- a person. Two arms, two legs, a head, that sort of thing. You can either create your own outline, or you can use the ultimate poppet template – a gingerbread man!

Several of the major craft stores sell large gingerbread man cookie cutters, especially around the holidays. You can pick one up for about $5, and use that as your template. Alternately, you can design your own, but basically the gingerbread man shape is perfect for poppets.

If you’re doing a spell for an animal – such as healing a sick pet – make the poppet shape accordingly.

Remember, your poppet doesn’t have to be huge, but it will need to be big enough that you can stuff it with all of the ingredients later. This is where planning ahead comes in handy!

Your poppet is going to start out looking something like this, although it may not be smiling when you get done with it. In fact, you can print this out, enlarge it on a copier, and use it for a pattern if you like.

Cutting and Sewing
So now you have your fabric, and you have a pattern. The next activity is going to be cutting out the poppet. This isn’t hard, but you will need a good pair of scissors, and some straight pins might be useful as well.

You will need two pieces of your fabric. Place the pieces right side together on a flat surface. This means that if your material has a print or design, the patterned sides should be facing each other. This is important!

Place your template or pattern on top of your fabric and secure it into place with your straight pins. Once your template is in position, you can cut out around it. Be sure to either leave some room around the edges, or design your pattern a bit larger so that you will have room to sew it shut. A ¼” to ½” margin is a good size.

Remove your template, and presto! You now have your poppet shapes!

Now, on to the sewing. If you’ve never used a needle and thread before, don’t be alarmed. It’s not as scary as it sounds, but it WILL require you to concentrate a little, and to be patient. If you’re pressed for time, you could theoretically use a sewing machine, but poppets like it when you take a bit of time and effort with them and sew them together by hand.

It’s probably a good idea at this point to pin the two pieces of material together, although if you’re using something such as felt, it may stick together on its own. Use your own best judgment.

Place the right sides of the material together, and then stitch around the edges. Don’t go all the way around. Leave yourself an opening (wide enough to get a couple of fingers into) at the head. Then turn your poppet right side out. Presto! You have one partially complete poppet.

Stuffing Your Poppet (or What the Heck Do I Put In There?)

Stuff your poppet with fiberfill, which is available at any craft store (or even Walmart). If you don’t have fiberfill, you could use cotton balls or even old pantyhose. Make sure you work the fiberfill all the way into the extremities. Once you have stuffed the arms and legs, you can work on the center of the body. This is where you will place your spell components. If you are adding herbs, stones, a taglock, whatever, this is the place to do it.

You may be wondering what in the world a taglock is. Well, quite simply, it’s the part of the poppet that links it to the person it represents. This can be hair or nail clippings, the person’s signature or name on a piece of paper, body fluids (yes, body fluids!) or even a photograph.

Once you have stuffed the components inside, finish filling the body and head. Sew the head shut with a small overcast stitch, as shown in the graphic.
Now that your poppet’s body is complete, it’s time to personalize it a bit more. This part is lots of fun!

Let’s Play “Name That Poppet”!

You’ve already placed the taglock and other goodies inside your poppet, but the more personalized you can make it, the better. Draw or paint a face on your poppet. Add yarn to represent hair if you like. If you have an item of the person’s clothing, wrap your poppet in it, or copy any identifying marks like tattoos or scars onto the poppet’s body.
Most importantly, repeatedly TELL the poppet who it is they represent. You can say something along the lines of “I have made you, and you are John Smith”, or whoever you are doing the spell for.

You can also add magickal or astrological symbols to the poppet, with paint, sewing or even markers. The possibilities are endless.

Poppets can be used for healing, for love, for money, for banishing, for revenge, to get a job – you name it, you can make a poppet for it. It’s simply a matter of figuring out what your goal is, and the best way to achieve that goal. The only limitations to poppet construction are your own imagination and creativity.

Sample Poppet Ideas

To Gain Employment
Material: Green or Gold satin.
Herbs: Chamomile, Clover, Ginger, Jasmine, and Pecan.
Stones: Snowflake Obsidian or Sodalite.
Create the poppet to represent yourself, and as you are working on it, think of all the positive attributes you have that would make you attractive to an employer. Another option would be to make a poppet representing the employer, and tell it why it would be in the company’s best interests to hire you.

Healing
Material: White cotton
Herbs: Lemon balm, carnation, ivy, and pine.
Stones: Bloodstone
When making this poppet, make sure you indicate on it what you are trying to heal, whether it is a sore leg, a bad case of lice, or even a broken heart. Focus all of your energy on the idea in question.

Love
Material: Red silk
Herbs: Rose petals, parsley, and peppermint.
Stones: Barite
You can make a poppet to represent the object of your affection, or make one to represent both you and the other person. If you are trying to draw a specific person to you, you can use pink or red cord to bind the poppets together. If you are simply trying to attract love to yourself, but you don’t have a specific target in mind, make sure you think about all the things that make you desirable to a potential lover.

Revenge
Material: Ground beef
Herbs: Avens, Fumitory, Heliotrope, Horseradish, Pepper, Rue, Sagebrush, Witch Grass, Yarrow.
You can take THIS little guy, and burn him to a crisp on the grill. Then bury him somewhere FAR away from you. Another option would be to feed him to your dog, or just leave him out in the sun to spoil and rot.

Poppet Magic

Poppet Magick - A Perspective
Source

If poppet magick was to be defined, it would be considered "sympathetic" magick. Like is, what like does. And while poppet magick, for the most part, is for healing. It has however, over the centuries , been used in many different ways.

Making a poppet is quite simple. It is usually made in the rough image of a human, though animals poppets are known as well. It can be made out of just about any material; cloth, wax, clay, various metals (lead, copper ect.) wood and so on. It is the intent and the energy that it is empowered with that counts. The poppet is often filled with certains herbs depending on the desired result.

Those of the VooDoun faith fill poppets or voodoo dolls or gris-gris as they are also known, with personal items such as hair, nail clippings, articles of clothing ect. They then use these gris-gris for binding and for acts of revenge.

It has been suggested that poppets were first used by Paleolithic hunters from about 50,000 B.C.E. An image of the animal being hunted was created, and a ritual resulting in a successful hunt was performed on the poppet. Indigenous people around the world have used this method of magick and in some parts of the world, they still do to this day.

In ancient Greece (4th. century B.C.E.), poppets were referred to as "Kolossos". Their primary purpose was for binding. This could be applied to one's enemies, deity, ghosts and spirits, and so on. They were also used for healing and self defense of the individual or community and protection of boundaries. The act of binding was similar to the voodoo method. In that various personal articles were embedded into the kolossos (poppet). The kolossos was then set upon by tying the figure up, mutilating various parts, and/or piercing it with thorns or nails. This was usually accompanied by various incantations and/or ritual in order to further enhance the binding.

One example of these incantations is:

" O Hermes Katokhos, restrain ( name of person ) !

I commit __________ to the Gods,

   to Ge, Hectate and Persephone!

   I bind _________, born of _________,

   in your presence, Hermes Katokhos.

   May he/she be restrained

in hand and foot and body! "

The kolossos is then concealed by burying it or sealing it in a jar or clay pot. or cast into the deep sea. Among the Greeks and Hellenes the most common material for making poppets were clay, wax and lead.

The Babylonians often used poppets for defensive or protective magick. They were often made of clay or wax. These poppets were place around the entrances to their homes. and still others were buried, depending on the need.

The ancient Egyptians also used poppets for protection from their enemies. Spells of destruction were written on the poppet and then smashed and buried.

The point being made is that poppets have been in use for centuries and in different ways by many diverse cultures.

In the United states, mountain folk, particularly the women, have used poppets for ages in order to attract and bind a lover. After casting a binding spell, they would bind the poppet with string or a ribbon and then conceal it where it could not be found. If found the spell is broken.

Witches often use poppets for healing and love magick. Though one should not use these for binding magick.

When doing a healing spell using a poppet, first stuff it with Calendula ( a good healing herb ) and then do a naming ritual, using the name of the person that the healing is for. Here is an example:

" Image of health, your purpose is healing.

I bestow upon you the name of _________ .

  Their body is your body.

  Their thoughts are your thoughts.

  Their emotions are your emotions.

Their state of health is your state of health.

I proclaim you both as one entity! "

Here is an example of a healing spell:

Material needed:

1 Yellow candle
herbs of calendula, Lavender, and Rosemary
Clear quartz crystal
Photo of the patient
Any personal articles

To be performed on a Sunday;

Stuff the poppet with the herbs and place the crystal at the heart of the poppet.
Seal the poppet and do the naming ritual.
Light the candle and visualize the patient as being healthy and energetic.

Chant three times:

" Lavender, marigold, and rosemary
The body, soul and mind are free
Crystal of quartz, take the pain away
Whole and healed and free today
With harm to none
My will is done

  So Mote It Be! "

Bury the poppet in the ground prior to sunset on the same day.

The same procedure should be followed when using the poppet for love magick. ( Attracting love, not binding ones emotions. Remember the Threefold law. ). Use herbs associated with love magick to stuff the poppet. Some of these would be Lavender, Rose, Patchouli and Basil. Some of the crystals that you could use are Lapis Lazuli, Alexandrite, Malachite, and Jade. Do the naming ritual, using aspects of love in place of healing. And then do a love chant, repeating it three times. Afterwards bury the poppet.

Color plays an important part when doing magick. And the color of the cloth used in poppet magick is no different. The colors can be used alone or in combination with other colors. Following are a few colors and their associated meanings to help you get started:

White - This is a universal color and can be used for just about any type of spell. It is often used for spells pertaining to spirituality.

Green - To be used for spells of prosperity, healing and fertility.

Red - Poppets made of this color are used for blood related diseases, sexual passion and courage spells.

Blue - This color is for emotional and mental healing, harmony and all round good health.

Black - Used to reverse curses or spells cast against you and to stop harmful gossiping.

Yellow - Used as an aid in mental healing.

Pink - A poppet made of this color cloth is for fertility, love and compassion towards others and yourself.

Brown - Financial success and to attract gain .

Orange - This color is used for success and to attract positive energy.

Purple - The color of this poppet is used to enhance psychic ability.
