The Rose

(From "Sticks, Stones, Roots, and Bones" by Stephanie Rose Bird)

No other plant is as intimately linked to love as the rose (Rosa spp.). When working with roses, seek out the old-fashioned scented types, such as those listed below, rather than the more neutral tea roses. Roses are beautiful, and like the lotus, they suggest female genitalia in the height of passion. The blush of the rose is often linked to the blush of a bride or a sexual partner during orgasm. In parts of Africa and the Middle East, holy temples are spiritually cleansed entirely with highly potent Bulgarian rose water. Rose water enhances the sacred environment.

A little-known fact is that roses are a systemic nervine (translation: they calm and soothe your nerves). Only your imagination sets the limits when it comes to using roses in love-drawing potions and tricks.

Old-Fashioned Shrub Roses for the Hoodoo's Garden

1. Apothecary's Rose -- This is a richly fragance, medicinal rose with a spicy scent.

2. Belle de Crecy -- This is considered the purest rose scent.

3. Bulgarian Rose and Damask -- The sweet, fragant roses from which quality rose water and attar of roses is made.

4. Celestial -- Contains the aroma of clean skin.

5. Madam Isaac Pereire, Guinee, and Souvenir de la Malmaison -- These are stunning and fragant.

6. Maiden's Blush -- This is considered to be refined.

The Definition of Love By Ryan O'Connell

You can stop taking quizzes in Cosmo. Here’s what love really is.

Love is still wanting to hold someone after you climax. After the initial euphoria from the orgasm wears off, you’re replaced with a sense of calm rather than a panic. You don’t want to search for your clothes, scramble to find your keys and figure out the best way to tell them, “See ya later forever!” You’re fine with chilling out in bed with the person and maybe ordering pad thai later.

Love is unattractive. It can expose our worst traits: Jealousy, irrational fears, heated anger; the gang’s all here! While it can bring out compassion and tenderness, it can also make you behave like the ugliest version of yourself. That can be okay for a little while, but love with real longevity should be like a xanax rather than an adderall.

Love is not afraid to be schmaltzy. There’s a reason why the most popular love songs are so lyrically simple. You can drown it in metaphors all you want but love usually boils down to, “You make me so happy. I want to hold your hand. I just want u 2 be mine 4ever!” You can be a 50-year-old linguistics professor at Columbia University and still find something to relate to in a Mariah Carey ballad if you’re in love because the feelings are so universal. It’s humbling, isn’t it? No matter who you are or what your background is, love can reduce you to Mariah Carey mush.

Love is an all-consuming drug. It gives us these natural highs we’ve only read about in books or heard in songs. It’s addictive. It’s what keeps us going to bars, drinking glasses of wine, going to that stupid house party in Bushwick; it’s all for the possibility of finding love. In the wrong hands, love can be dangerous and scary. If someone lacks a healthy foundation, love can kill. All of these crimes you read about in the newspapers are usually linked to passionate love. “I did it because I loved them just…too much.”

Love is not what our parents had. In high school, you never wanted to think about your mother and father having once slept with people in the backseat of cars and feeling warm and happy. That would make it feel less special and young. It would make love have less to do with you when, EXCUSE ME, it has EVERYTHING to do with you.

Love is getting drunk with your significant other at a party and taking a cab home with your bodies intertwined. You feel safest in these moments, the most secure. Entering a social gathering with someone who loves you is the biggest security blanket. People leave the party as a parade of droopy expressions and sad cocktail dresses. But not you. “Sorry guys, I’m in love! I’m taking a car!”

Love is fucking stupid. Love is fucking smart. Love is about betraying yourself, of compromising your ideals for someone else’s approval. That’s actually the bad kind of love, but I guess it all blurs together when you’re young or when you’re old or when you don’t love yourself.

Love is your significant other telling you about their favorite album and then making a point to fall in love with it on your own. Love is wondering why your better half loves certain things. You think you can find remnants of them in their favorite films, books and songs, but you usually can’t.

Love is finding yourself feeling protective over someone else’s well-being Love is being incensed with rage when someone or something has done your lover wrong.

Love is wanting your partner to cum. And if they can’t, just say, “That’s okay. I’m enjoying this.” It might be bullshit, but they’ll be orgasming in the next five minutes. Trust me.

Love isn’t always marriage. Marriage is spending $60,000 so everyone can know that someone loves you. You know what’s certainly not love? Debt. In some cases, love can be divorce.

Love is a back massage, a mindfuck, a hard cock, a pair of perfect breasts, of feeling unashamed about the cellulite on your body. Love is someone giving a shit about you enough to argue. Love is not passive. Love is “Don’t fucking touch me right now.” Love is “Who the FUCK were you talking to?” Love is sometimes hating yourself for a second. Love is hate. Period. Indifference is the real killer of love and the true antithesis.

When love leaves you, you should be lying on your bathroom floor with no resolve. You’re smoking cigarettes in the bathtub and crying about everything bad that’s ever happened.

Love is someone seeing the beauty in you and wanting to bask in it every day all day. Love is not guaranteed. We are not owed love. That’s why when we get it, we know how lucky we are and hold on to it for dear life.

So, yeah. That’s what love is. Anyone know where to get some?

The Magic of Food: Love

From Scott Cunningham's "Encyclopedia of Wicca in the Kitchen"

There are many forms of love. Most of the foods mentioned here can be used for love in all its manifestations.

All love starts from within. We cannot and must not give love to others before we have respect and love for ourselves. Except out of compassion or pity, who would love us if we dont even like ourselves?

One of the physical manifestations of self love is taking care of ourselves. Food, which certainly affects our bodies, also affects our emotions. It can be a powerful tool in creating self love and, once this has been accomplished, to bring us into aloving, multifaceted relationship with another person.

The old saying, The way to a mans heart is through his stomach is certainly true, even if sexist. In the early stages of a relationship, preparing meals for your love is an outward manifestation of your feelings. You not only care enough to cook for him (or her), youre also directly contributing to that persons survival by offering him or her the food necessary for life.

On the other hand, eating food specifically prepared for you by another is not only a gratifying, nourishing experience, it also shows your trust in that person (at least, your trust that she or he wont deliberately poison you).

Candlelit dinners in a small restaurant, with splits of champagne and tasty food are designed to create emotional intimacy between the diners. Dining out is an accepted part of the dating process, and can certainly be continued with good effect during magical diets.

To gain the magical effects of these love foods, however, they should be prepared and eaten at home. If youve already established a relationship with another person, prepare the dishes together. This implies an equal, harmonious relationship. Simple eat these foods and visualize if youre not currently enjoying a relationship. You soon will be.

Start with the love for the self, then branch out in search of another. If you already have another, deepen the relationship with these foods.

Dont make the common mistake of believing these foods will produce a desire for sex. These are love foods, after all.

Love Spells

The Following Spells have been tested and proven to work if released correctly. The source of the spells is the Ultimate Encyclopedia of Spells by Michael Johnstone. Regularly, the best times to cast a love spell is under Friday, during the last full moon of the month.

A Spell that has Worked for Many

This is one of many spells that have been developed over the centuries by young women eager for love. It has worked for many of them. There is no reason why it shouldn’t work for you.

You will need:
A very fragrant, fresh red rose
Two red candles

Before you consecrate the rose and the candles find out what time the sun will rise on the following morning. Put the rose and the candles on the altar, one candle on either side of the flower. If you wish to leave a suitable crystal or talisman alongside the candles, so much the better. Next morning at sunrise take the rose outside, breathe in its sweet perfume and then hold it in front of you. Focus on it for a moment or two, then say:

Flower of love, please let it be,
That true love is coming to me.
And let it be done, that it harm no one.

Go indoors and lay the rose between the candles and light them. Focus on the flame and see true love burning in the heart of the one you want to attract. Or, if you have no one special in mind, bring to mind someone with features and a nature you find attractive. Keep the candles burning until the rose loses its bloom, then extinguish them, before burying the rose in the garden. If you do not have access to a garden you could press the rose between the pages of a favourite book of poems.

A Spell with No One Particular in Mind

This spell is cast by those looking for true love, but who have no particular person in mind. It should be cast out of doors beside a stream or river.

You will need:
Rose petals from a living, wild rose

Wiccans will approach the rose with reverence and ask its permission before removing the petals. Then they will thank it for its generosity. As you are plucking the petals, visualize someone who has all the qualities you think are necessary in the ideal partner – humour, generosity, compassion, whatever. Take the petals to a stream or river, hold them in cupped hands and, again visualizing the qualities you are looking for, let them drop into the flowing water, saying:

As this bloom is taken downstream
May I find the love of which I dream.
And let it be done, that it harm no one.

The spell is cast.

A Spell For New Love

Use the power of the new moon to cast this spell to add spice to your life by bringing a new love into it.

You will need:
A salt shaker
A pepper shaker
Three feet of pink ribbon

As you consecrate the ingredients, think of one of the spices as masculine and the other as feminine. Then tie the female object to one end of the ribbon and the male one to the other end. As you are doing this say:

Ribbon of love, as I bind thee,
Please let true love find me.
And let it be done, that it harm no one.

Next morning, untie the two shakers, then retie them a little closer to each other, repeating the incantation. Do this each day for a week, timing it so that by the seventh day the two are touching. Now bind them together, repeating the incantation and leave them until the night of the full moon by which time either someone should have entered your life, or someone you already know will have you in their thoughts. They may not declare themselves right away, but they will eventually.

A Spell for Love Within the Month

This spell is most potent if cast when the moon is new. And as the object of the spell weaving is to bring new love into your life, if you use nothing but previously unused materials the spell will be all the more effective and should bring a new love before the lunar month has passed.

You will need:
A heart-shaped rose petal (if this is not
available, cut a heart shape out of a piece
of red paper)
A clean sheet of white paper
A new pen
A pink candle
A new envelope

On the day when a new moon is due to appear in the sky, write the following on a fresh sheet of  paper with the new pen:

As this heart glows in candlelight
I draw my love to me tonight.
And let it be done, that it harm no one.

When night falls and the moon has risen, bathe and get ready for bed. Wearing freshly laundered (or new) nightclothes, light the candle and read the spell aloud.

Now hold the rose petal or heart-shaped piece of paper in front of the candle and see the flame shine through it. Place the heart and written spell in the envelope and seal it with wax from the candle. Put the envelope in a safe place and don’t give into the temptation to touch it for 28 days, by which time new love should have come to you (even if you do not recognize it at the time).

A Simple Spell

Many people who have cast this little spell have said that, despite its simplicity, it has a high success rate in having the unspoken love you feel for someone acknowledged. It can also be cast with no one particular in mind.

You will need:
Two leaves that can be drawn on
Green thread
A needle
Seven pennies

Draw a picture of yourself on one of the leaves and a picture of the person you want to return your love on the other. If you have no one special in mind and are casting this spell simply to bring love into your life, as well as an image of how you would like your lover to look, you could also add a list of the characteristics he or she should have. Sew the two leaves together with the green thread and knot it tightly.

Take the leaves to a tree that you are fond of, one with a natural crevice within which you can hide them. Making sure that they will not blow away, gently push the leaves into the crevice, saying as you do so:

Earth,Water, Air and Fire,
Bring me *****’s true love as I desire.
And let it be done, that it harm no one.

Now bury the coins around the base of the tree and trust to the elements to make your magic work.
